What is Probenecid used for?
Probenecid is used in the treatment of chronic gout or gouty arthritis. These conditions are caused by too much uric acid in the blood. The medicine works by removing the extra uric acid from the body. Probenecid does not cure gout, but after you have been taking it for a few months it will help prevent gout attacks. This medicine will help prevent gout attacks only as long as you continue to take it.
Probenecid is also used to prevent or treat other medical problems that may occur if too much uric acid is present in the body.
Probenecid is sometimes used with certain kinds of antibiotics to make them more effective in the treatment of infections. New research suggests that combining Probenecid with Tamiflu can provide a more effective preventative to contracting the H5N1 strain of Avian Bird Flu.
Before using Probenecid
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. Inform your Doctor or Pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking.
Do not take this medicine if you are also taking salicylates.
Additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking methotrexate, dyphylline, or zidovudine.
Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.
Directions
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor.
If this medicine upsets your stomach, take it with food, milk, or antacids. Drink plenty of liquid up to, 6 to 8 glasses (8 ounces each) daily.
If you miss a dose?
Take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Side Effects
Although side effects from probenecid are not common, they can occur. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- headache
- upset stomach
- vomiting
- loss of appetite
- dizziness
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- severe skin rash
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- unusual bleeding or bruising
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
