Somac / Protonix is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers. The most common cause of these conditions is over production of acid in the stomach.
Dosage
Typically patients are prescribed up to 40mg once daily for the treatment of ulcerate conditions. However, you are strongly urged to consult with your doctor or medical professional about the appropriate dosage for your condition and follow their instructions.
Side Effects
Pantoprazole may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
- diarrhea
- headache
- stomach pain
- gas or bloating
Pantoprazole may cause other side effects. Call your doctor if you have any unusual problems while taking this medication
Precautions
Before taking Somac / Protonix:
- tell your doctor or medical professional if you are allergic to pantoprazole or any other medications.
- tell your doctor or medical professional what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking, especially if you are taking any of the following: ampicillin (Omnipen, Polycillin, Totacillin); ketoconazole (Nizoral); and vitamins containing iron. Your doctor may change the doses of your medications or monitor you for side effects.
- tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking pantoprazole, call your doctor or medical professional.
