 Pepcid AC - an overview

PEPCID AC is not an antacid. Antacids neutralize some stomach acid and provide short term relief. PEPCID AC is an acid controller. PEPCID AC works by controlling the production of stomach acid. It can be used to either prevent heartburn or to treat the symptoms of heartburn when they occur. For prevention of symptoms, one tablet is taken one hour before consuming food or beverages expected to cause symptoms. For relief of symptoms, one tablet is taken when the symptoms of heartburn occur. And this one small tablet can control stomach acid production for up to 9 hours.

Not only is effective in controlling stomach acid, it features a remarkable safety profile(1). "It works directly to suppress stomach production of acid. Therefore, it can treat as well as prevent heartburn'' said Steve Balestrini, pharmacist. "PEPCID AC is also a well tolerated product. It has no known clinically significant interactions with other drugs. That's particularly important for older patients with heartburn who may be taking other medications.''

PEPCID AC is a competitive inhibitor of histamine H2 receptors, PEPCID AC reduces the volume of acid and pepsin content of basal, nocturnal and stimulated gastric secretion. Prescription H2 blockers have been safely used in Canada by millions of people since 1977 to treat acid related disorders such as duodenal and gastric ulcers, reflux esophagitis and other hypersecretory conditions. PEPCID AC contains a low dose (10mg) of the ingredient famotidine. Extensive clinical testing has shown that PEPCID AC is both effective and safe in controlling stomach acid. As a result, with one small tablet, heartburn sufferers can relieve and prevent symptoms and control stomach acid virtually all day or all night.

Does the use of PEPCID AC have the potential to mask more serious gastrointestinal problems?

In clinical studies of over-the-counter PEPCID AC use, there were no reports of serious gastrointestinal complications.

Like other over-the-counter medications, including antacids, PEPCID AC contains a warning for patients to contact their physician if symptoms persist.

As stated on the PEPCID AC package label, "If you have trouble swallowing, or persistent abdominal pain, see your doctor promptly. You may have a serious condition that may need different treatment."

In addition, the package label states, "Do not take the maximum daily dosage for more than 2 weeks continuously except under the advice and supervision of a physician."

Warning

Indigestion may be a sign of a more serious problem: for example heart problems. Watch for these warning signs and contact your doctor if:

  • Your indigestion is not helped by any lifestyle changes recommended by your doctor.
  • You are 40 years of age or older and have previously had good digestion.
  • Your bowel motions are dark, black and look like tar.
  • Your vomit appears to contain blood or look like ground coffee.
  • You have recently lost weigh and/or generally feel unwell.
  • You have pain or difficulty swallowing food.
  • Your chest pain or burning is not helped with indigestion medicines.
