Chitosan:
Prices and Ordering Information
A new fat inhibitor has been
chosen as a natural alternative to the controversial fat
substitute Olestra(R) for a snack food product called Chitosan
Chips(TM).
Chitosan Chips are being produced
by Robert's American Gourmet, Inc., makers of high quality
herbal natural snacks and will be available in food stores
nationally by August 15th, 1997 (or to order call
800-626-7557).
"The inclusion of Chitosan into
Robert's successful line of healthy snack foods is the result
of what I consider to be a very real scare over Olestra," says
Robert Ehrlich, Chairman and founder of Robert's American
Gourmet.
Olestra is a fat inhibitor that
has been substantiated by the FDA to potentially cause
intestinal cramping and diarrhea in some cases.
Chitosan is a natural alternative
as a fat inhibitor, without the alleged side effects that
other fat substitute products may cause. Chitosan (pronounced
Key-Toe-Sahn) is an all natural product that is derived from
the polysaccharide Chitin. Chitin is found in the
exo-skeheliusns of shrimp, crabs and other
shellfish.
Chitosan traps the fat in the
stomach and prevents its absorption into the digestive tract.
Chitosan fiber possesses a positive ionic charge. This
positive charge gives Chitosan the ability to chemically bond
with negatively charged lipids and fats.
A 1994 report from ARS Medicina
(Helsinki) reported that test subjects lost 8% of body weight
in four weeks when using Chitosan. Chitosan has been used for
over two decades without side effects.
"The Momentum is growing for fat
free foods for people on the move, that are full of flavor,
and that provide a healthy benefit," says Ehrlich, who has
been creating healthy snack food products for over twelve
years. Ehrlich notes that "the FDA warning required for full
disclosure on each product containing Olestra was reason
enough for going with Chitosan."
Robert's American Gourmet offers
other snacks that include an all herbal line of Ginkgo Bilota
